Wetbelt maintenance and servicing info

Vehicles that are affectected

Vehicles that may suffer from belt failure include many models from Ford (EcoBoost and EcoBlue engines), Peugeot and Citroën (PureTech engines), Vauxhall, and certain Honda and VW TDI models. These issues are often related to the wet timing belts, which are commonly used in newer, more fuel-efficient engines, especially in models like the Ford Transit and various passenger cars from these manufacturers.

Affected manufacturers and engines

Ford EcoBoost petrol engines and EcoBlue diesel engines, including those in the Fiesta, Puma, Focus, Transit, and other models.

Peugeot and Citroën PureTech engines, found in models like the Peugeot 208, 3008, and Citroën C3, C4, and C5 Aircros

Vauxhall Models with PureTech engines, such as the Corsa and Astra.

Other manufacturers Some newer Volkswagen TDI models have also faced shortened replacement intervals due to issues with wet timing belts.

Certain Honda engines like the 1.0-liter Turbo found in the Civic, have also been cited.

Why these vehicles are affected

The problem is particularly associated with wet timing belts, which are bathed in engine oil. Many of these newer engines use wet belts to improve efficiency and reduce emissions. Manufacturers have had to change replacement intervals, sometimes shortening them significantly, due to the problems.

Other potential causes of belt failure

Contamination: Fluid leaks from the engine, power steering pump, or air-conditioning compressor can cause the belt to slip or degrade prematurely.

Improper tension: Both over-tensioning and under-tensioning can cause a belt to fail by increasing wear or causing it to slip. This can also damage the pulleys and other components.

Component wear: Worn or damaged pulleys or tensioners can cause excessive wear on the belt. Models with PureTech engines, such as the Corsa and Astra.

Age and wear: Over time, rubber belts can harden and develop cracks, especially if not replaced at the manufacturer's recommended intervals.
